Laptop hinge importance, causes of hinge failure

One surprisingly weak point in laptops is the 'hinge'.

 

 

You might not notice it at first, but with continued use,

problems often arise, leading to breakdowns.

 

That's why manufacturers don't pay much attention to the durability of hinges.

 

 

After all, broken hinges lead to new laptop purchases.

 

And since they can attribute the blame to user error,

As laptops become increasingly slim, bezels have started to get thinner.

 

In exchange for these thinner bezels,

the space for hinge reinforcement structures has narrowed,

 

resulting in a design where force is concentrated in a small area.

 

 

When bezels were wider, the elongated part,

as shown in the picture, helped distribute the force.

 

So, when opening and closing the laptop,

the force was dispersed through this longer part.

 

 

This distribution of force away from the hinge area reduced the chances of damage around the hinge.

 

 

 

However, as bezels became thinner

 

The elongated reinforcement structure disappeared,

and the design shifted to concentrate the force applied to the hinge area in one place.

 

 

As a result, this kind of damage has become common.

 

It's not that the hinge itself breaks, but rather stress accumulates around the hinge,

eventually leading to the surrounding area breaking.

 

 

If you always keep it on a desk and rarely open or close it, it's not a problem.

 

However, if you carry it in a bag or frequently open and close it, you can't avoid this kind of damage.

 

 

 

 

 

A structure where the hinge is directly bolted to a machined metal frame might be somewhat better,

 

but nowadays, there are also structures where the hinge mounting structure is glued and then the hinge is bolted to that.

 

In these cases, the glued mounting structure can detach, leading to breakage.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Laptops with 360-degree rotation should have a stronger hinge area,

but in reality, there are very few products made with strong hinges.

 

 

They are more prone to damage because they are frequently folded, unfolded, and rotated.

 

Therefore, when choosing a laptop, it is helpful to look for repair videos, disassembled photos,

 

and repair manuals to see how the parts are designed.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Even within the same manufacturer, hinge designs vary from model to model,

and business laptop product lines tend to have stronger hinge construction.
